In Her Shoes

Yesterday could not have been a more exciting day!  I got to do an appearance for the show and it was so much fun.  Chip and I went on Better Mornings Atlanta which airs on the local CBS station to dish about Elbow Room.  It was so cool getting to see a behind the scenes look at a live morning newscast.  In case you didn’t get to see it yesterday.  Here is the webcast of it…

First Episode–The Webbs

Thanks to all of you who tuned in to the premiere episode of HGTV’s Elbow Room.  Saturday was such a fun day!  It was so exciting to see all of everyone’s hard work come to life on TV.  I have been dying to share this experience with all of my readers for quite a while, but I’ve had to restrain myself until the show aired.

I’m thrilled to be able to show you pictures of the first episode.  I thought I would share a few tid-bits about each of the episodes as they air.  Here is an after shot of the home.

This episode was such a fun episode to work on.  The family was absolutely amazing, and they were thrilled to be a part of the show.  We took the main living space in their ranch home, which was divided into four rooms, and transformed it into one open and airy space.

I really had no clue what to expect while we were filming during this pilot episode.  If you can imagine a renovation in fast forward that is basically what it was.  From demolition of the space to the final homeowner reveal was right around three weeks.  I was amazed at how it was possible to do a renovation so quickly.  There were a few late nights and a lot of effort, but we did manage to get it done.2011-07-22_12-30-43_990

These photos were taken about two days before the final reveal.  It’s crazy to imagine that this unfinished space went from this state to totally complete in two or three days.

For me, one of the most fun parts of this episode was getting to make a custom piece of artwork.  It was very easy to make.  I painted various widths and colors of stripes on a piece of precut luann. Then I added a coat of resin to bring out the colors in the paints.

Here is the finished piece hanging in the dining area.

Hope you enjoyed this little look into the show.  Just in case you are interested in seeing a little bit of fun on the set here’s a link to our cast and crew FB page.  Only members of the cast and crew can join, but anyone can view it.  We have too much fun on the set!  [Elbow Deep]

Elbow Room Premiere Time!!!

elbow room flyer

Many of you already know, but for those of you who don't, for the last six or so months I have been working on a show for a little network called HGTV!!!  This past year has been one amazing journey after another.  Not only was my son, Chase, born almost a year ago, but three weeks later I auditioned for and won a spot as co-host and design coordinator of a new project that was being pitched to HGTV.  Within weeks filming began for the pilot of "Elbow Room" with host Chip Wade.  In October, we found out that we were green-lit for the first season of "Elbow Room" and the rest is history.

With one extra-long week to go, we are coming to the close of our first season.  Thirteen episodes in, I am so excited to have been a part of this show.  My limits as a designer have been pushed to the most amazing sides of extreme.  I've worked on projects that I never dreamed of working on, and I've met so many amazing people along the way.  My fingers are crossed and we are anxiously waiting for confirmation of a second season.

Please set your DVRs and tune in for "Elbow Room" on HGTV, premiering this Saturday, May 12th at 1 pm EST.  We are also on Facebook and Twitter.  Make sure you check us out.

Thanks for all your support!

xoxo, Cristi

JCP

I was kindof surprised to see this slipcovered sofa on JCP’s website.  I think it’s safe to say that JCP is stepping up their game.

image

Looks pretty darn good, right?  And what about the price? $900.  You can’t beat that.  I’m not sure about the quality because the reviews are mixed, but if you have a room that you won’t be using much this sofa would probably be great.

And look at this mercury lamp

image

At $65 it’s a fraction of the cost of this lamp from Pottery Barn.

As far as window treatments go, JCPenney has long been one of my main hardware resources.  It might surprise you that a designer would buy window treatment hardware from JCP.  When it comes to basic, no frills hardware at a low cost though, they can’t be beat.  One of my favorite rods is the Studio ceiling mount rod.  I love it because you can mount it to the ceiling or the wall.

The thin profile is perfect.  Here’s an example from a project that I did a couple of years ago.

Hopefully Penney’s will continue to step it up in the future.  I’m liking this new branding direction.

Kid’s ARt Idea

I was flipping through the pages of my West Elm catalog over the weekend and saw the most adorable novelty Easter plates.  I immediately thought “how cute would these be hanging in a kid’s room!”

West Elm

My nursery is already designed, but hopefully one of you can use these in your child’s room or even a bathroom.  They are on sale right now for $6 a piece.  You can’t beat that.

And it would be even more adorable if you bought some of these hanging vases from cb2, hung them mixed in with the plates and filled them with jelly beans.

Happy Monday y’all!

p.s. – if any of you happen to do this please send me pictures.

High Style High Rise

It’s not very often that you can see the designs of six major Atlanta designers all in one building, but Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles is making this possible.  AH&L is sponsoring High Style High Rise, a tour of six superbly designed homes at The Residences at W Atlanta – Downtown, which benefits the High Museum of Art running from March 8th through April 1st.  Each featured designer is paired with a local retailer.  The pairings include Michel Boyd for Bradley Hughes, Amy D. Morris for The Mercantile, Bill Peace for Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, Barbara Westbrook for Room & Board, Kerry Howard for Redefined Home Boutique and Susan Ferrier for R Hughes Showroom.

See and hear Barbara Westbrook, one of the designers, in the video below as she talks about how she gets started with designing a space.

You can attend a VIP preview event for the newly designed residences March 8th from 6pm to 9pm and enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres all benefiting the High.  Tickets for Thursday night’s event are $100 and are available online HERE or RSVP to atlantahomesmag@gmail.com to pay at the door.  After Thursday’s VIP preview event you will be able to tour these show homes for $20 per person through April 1st.

Press

I think every designer has hopes of seeing their work in print one day.  I’m so excited because Cottages & Bungalows and the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Homefinder both featured my work this month.

Cottages & Bungalows magazine featured a guest bedroom from a house I designed in Dallas, Texas in their “Inspiring Bedrooms” article.

An office and bar area that I designed in the same Dallas home was featured in the Atlanta Journal Constitution Homefinder along with a children’s room that I designed locally.  Also featured in the article were designers Christiane Lemieux, founder and creative director of DwellStudio, and Carter Kay, owner of Carter Kay Interiors.
